Carol Sue Atha Fleming, age 76, passed away November 22, 2020 at her Fairmont home surrounded by family and friends. She was born July 13, 1944 at her family’s home on Saltwell Road, near Bridgeport. Carol is the daughter of the late Iva Maxine (Mickey) McDonald Atha and the late Homer Claude Atha.
Carol is survived by her husband, Thomas L. Fleming with whom she was married to for 57 years. She was a graduate of Shinnston High School and Fairmont State College. Carol worked for the US Government from 1994 until 2011 when she retired.
Carol loved genealogy, baking, scrapbooking, gardening and reading. Carol enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and loved attending their sporting events as well as dirt track racing. She was always ready for a new adventure.
Carol is survived by two sons, Thomas L. Fleming Jr and wife, Ruby, of Clarksburg, and Brian E. Fleming and wife, Mary Jo, of Fairmont; four grandchildren, Jeramie Fleming, Jessicah Canfield and husband Rusty, Justin Fleming and Delaney Fleming; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Claudia Holbert and her husband Bill; Shirla Atha; and Debbie Samargo and her husband Paul; her brother, Daniel Atha and his wife Kim; as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her sister, Donna Lou Atha Rapp.
The family will receive friends at Perine Funeral Home, 1348 S. Pike St. Shinnston, on Tuesday from 3:00 – 8:00pm. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 25th at 1:00 PM with Pastor Lonnie Fast officiating. In keeping with Carol’s wishes, cremation will follow the service. Interment at the Atha Cemetery on Atha Run Road near Farmington will follow at a later date. Online condolences and memories can be extended to the family at www.perinefunerals.com
